For me, it is natural that we value our own species more than other species, yet it is also a personal value of mine to honor all forms of life. I started eating seafood after I lived in France for a while France (where vegetarianism is much less popular) and found out I was allergic to wheat (which is in a lot of meat substitutes). Our relationship with animals as food can be complicated!

This also made me think of the animal rights campaign that was going on in France when I was there. Horse meat is considered a delicacy in France (and is apparently de-licious). A lot of people get up in arms about it, though, because horses are thought of as *companion* animals. And yes, horses are beautiful - but aren't cows, pigs, ducks, and even...mice?Victoriahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14779269513881014885noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7744143356678453071.post-6715211526995526742011-04-10T22:20:23.342-05:002011-04-10T22:20:23.342-05:00I enjoyed Herzog's book, too. If I had the patience for more education, I'd get a doctorate with a focus in anthrozoology -- it's so interesting!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7744143356678453071.post-69505451625096977222011-04-10T17:55:38.427-05:002011-04-10T17:55:38.427-05:00Nice! I took a class last year that frequently delved into how we balance human needs and wildlife needs, especially when it comes to conservation and sustainable development. It can be horribly confusing to understand your own take on the issue. If you haven't already, I recommend looking into some of the literature that ecofeminism scholars have written on the relationship between humans and animals.Jenny Seiferthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14787645896595766946noreply@blogger.com
