Sci For Six-Year-Olds

Science For Six-Year-Olds is a segment on Science Decoded where I blog back and forth with a class (my mom's) of first graders at Lincoln-Hubbard Elementary School. My mom is a teacher in my hometown and she and I wanted to find a way to use my blog and my experience in science communication to incorporate technology into her science lessons.

For the first year of posts I wrote introductions about the different lessons in their science curriculum.
The States of Matter (September 2011)
Sugar Maple Trees (October 2011)
The Butter Experiment (December 2011)
Hurricanes (February 2012)
Noctilucent Clouds (March 2012)
Groundwater (April 2012)
The Bear Skull (June 2012)

However, after seeing conversations on Twitter about #Iamscience and #realwomeninscience we realized that what was missing from the science education in her class was a conversation about what it really means to be a scientist. Thus, we launched Science For Six Year Olds (SFSYO) Scientist of the Month.

School Year 2012-2013:
Introducing the Scientist of the Month (September 2012)
Scientist of the Month Penny Higgins (October 2012)
Scientist of the Month Philipp Schiffer (November 2012)
Scientist of the Month Anne-Marike Schiffer (December 2012)
Scientist of the Month Pete Etchells (January 2013)
Scientist of the Month Rebecca Wragg Sykes (February 2013)
Scientist of the Month Michael Dickey (March 2013)
Scientist of the Month Jennifer Laaser (April 2013)
Scientist of the Month David Tarpey (May 2013)
Scientist of the Month Sarah Boon (June 2013)

I recently asked on twitter for some other resources for teachers who want to implement science into their classrooms using new(er) technology. Here are a few that were recommended:

The Kids Should See This
Iridescent
Khan Academy
